Frequently Asked Questions

What if English is not my first language?

If English is not your first language, don't worry! In debate settings, students are often grouped with others who are at a similar level of English proficiency. This ensures that everyone has a fair opportunity to participate and engage in discussions. Being surrounded by peers with similar language abilities can provide a supportive environment where you can enhance your skills and gain confidence in expressing your thoughts and ideas.

Do I need to have prior debating experience?

No prior debate experience is necessary! Our 12-week course, "Fundamentals of Debate," is specifically designed for students with no prior experience in debating. Whether you're a beginner or have never debated before, this course will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to participate effectively. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone can learn and grow, regardless of their previous debate experience.

What if I can't attend one of the classes?

If you are unable to attend one of the classes, we understand that unexpected situations can arise. As long as you provide a notice of at least 12 hours in advance, you will not be charged for the missed class. We value your commitment to the course and aim to be flexible to accommodate any scheduling conflicts or emergencies that may arise. Please make sure to inform us within the specified timeframe to ensure that you are not charged for the missed session.

What slots are availailble and what is the timezone?

Our classes are primarily scheduled on the weekends, from morning to late afternoon, in an effort to accommodate students across different time zones. We understand the importance of finding a convenient time for students from various regions to participate. We make every effort to ensure that the timing works for a majority of our participants. However, we also take special scheduling requests into consideration. If you have specific timing requirements, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Can I ask for extra help in the beginning to help me become more confident?

Absolutely! We understand that building confidence in debate can be important, especially in the beginning. As part of our membership program, "The Elite League of Debaters," we offer a bonus feature of 1-on-1 coaching. This means you'll have the opportunity to receive personalized guidance and support from the coach. The coaching sessions are designed to help you develop your skills, boost your confidence, and address any specific areas of concern. We believe that this additional support can greatly enhance your learning experience and help you thrive in the world of debate.

Will there be any homework or preparation needed for every class?

Yes, there will be homework and preparation required for every class. To ensure a high level of discussion and engagement, preparing for your position in a debate is crucial. Homework assignments will be provided to help you research and gather evidence, develop your arguments, and refine your debating skills. This preparation will not only enhance your own understanding of the topic but also contribute to meaningful and informed discussions during the class sessions. It is through this active participation and preparation that you will be able to excel in the world of debate.

How are students placed in each of groups?

Students are placed in groups based on their level of English proficiency and debate skills. We carefully assess each student's abilities to ensure that they are grouped with peers who have similar levels of English proficiency and debating experience. This approach allows for a balanced and supportive learning environment where students can engage in discussions and activities that are suitable for their skill level. Placing students in groups according to their language and debate proficiency also helps to promote productive learning and growth, as it allows for targeted instruction and tailored feedback that meets each student's specific needs.

What are the tech requirements?

The tech requirements for our program are as follows:

1. Desktop or laptop computer with a webcam.
2. Stable internet connection.
3. A pair of headphones with a microphone.
4. A Gmail account (for Google Docs and Google Drive).

When will I learn if I have been accepted?

After the interview process, you will be notified of your acceptance into the program once a seat becomes available. We understand the anticipation and eagerness to receive confirmation, and we strive to inform applicants as soon as a seat becomes open and they have been accepted. While the exact timing may vary depending on seat availability and the number of applicants, we aim to provide prompt updates to all applicants regarding their acceptance into the program.
